Overview

College admissions can sometimes hinge on a student’s ACT score, making it one of the most pivotal exams a high school student will undertake. With its focus on English, Math, Reading, and Science, the ACT is a comprehensive assessment that can feel overwhelming.

Preparing for the ACT may be a student’s first deep dive into standardized testing, which means that ACT preparation can often unveil academic areas in need of strengthening. Given the diverse curricula students experience throughout their schooling, this variability is understandable. That is why Academic Approach’s ACT Preparation Classroom Course ensures that these nuances are tackled head-on and that all students in the classroom are prepared for every facet of the ACT.

Our Approach

Whether facilitated by our dedicated team of  instructors or led by your school staff, our Academic Approach ACT program will set students on a path towards ACT mastery, tailored to meet their distinct academic profiles.

About Our Curriculum

Versatility

We recognize the overlapping areas of academic mastery required to prepare students for standardized tests (like the ACT) and for overall college readiness. We capitalize on these two goals by focusing our curriculum on the skills that will not only prepare students for the ACT but also benefit students' overall learning.

Scaffolding

Our programs are crafted to bridge the gap between students’ current knowledge and advanced academic challenges, all with the goal of scaffolding towards college readiness. With every lesson, students deepen their foundation, building upon what they already know. Every stage in their learning is a structured elevation, cementing previous understanding while ushering in new insight.

Rigor

Research shows that many students are not provided rigorous grade-level work in their classrooms, leading to gaps in students’ ability to succeed in post-secondary education. Our rigorous curriculum and focus on essential skills prepare students not only for the ACT but also for college-level courses.

Precision

Leveraging a data-driven approach to instruction, we pinpoint the most crucial skills for each student’s success on the ACT. Our customized course syllabi reflect the specific English, Math, Reading, and Science knowledge for which students will be responsible.

An Overview of the ACT Exam

The ACT is a standardized test widely used for college admissions in the United States. Comprising four core sections—English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science—this exam assesses a student’s college readiness. It also includes an optional Writing section.

The ACT English section (45 minutes, 75 multiple-choice questions) tests a student’s grasp of standard written English, including grammar skills like punctuation and sentence structure, and rhetorical skills like organization and concision. The English section presents several passages, each accompanied by a set of multiple-choice questions.

The ACT Math section (60 minutes, 60 multiple-choice questions) assesses a student’s knowledge in areas like algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. The questions gauge students’ problem-solving capabilities, asking them to apply mathematical principles in practical contexts.

The ACT Reading section (35 minutes, 40 multiple-choice questions) evaluates a student’s reading comprehension skills. Featuring four passages from different genres, the Reading section challenges students to identify main ideas, locate details, draw conclusions, and make comparisons. It also tests their ability to determine an author’s tone and intent.

The ACT Science section (35 minutes, 40 multiple-choice questions) requires students to understand, analyze, and make conclusions about various sets of scientific information. The Science section tests students’ ability to interpret and analyze scientific data.

The optional Writing section of the ACT measures a student’s ability to create a well-structured and coherent argument on a given topic. While not all colleges require students to submit ACT Writing scores, the Writing section provides an opportunity for students to showcase their writing and critical thinking abilities.
